On your ipaq goto Start>Settings>System>iPaq Audio>Microphone AGC and
disable AGC and set the microphone gain to 15 and see how that works. The
agc in ppc's leaves much to be desired and I have better results setting the
gain myself. Also if you goto Start>Settings>Input>Options you'll see your
recording format set to 11,025 hz, 8bit Mono(if you haven't changed it).
The spike you see at 10khz is the word clock for the audio. If you set it
to 44,100, 16 bit the spike will move to 16khz, normally there should be a
filter which nulls out that spike but even on high end digital equipment you
will still see it. Hope this helps.
