Re: Ipaq 5915 Wireless Network Connection (FAILURE)

I got a phone call from Belkin today. Their level 3 support is going to
take another shot at settings. I'm not very encouraged by their interest.
I had to go around Tech Support to customer service to get to level 3
support. (Calling them tomorrow when I have more time).
Belkins stance is; "If you have five different devices connecting to the
router, then the Ipaq has a software problem". They feel that if the Belkin
router is assigning the Ipaq an IP address, then it's done it's job, just as
it does it's job with all other devices that are assigned and IP address by
the router.
I've had no trouble with Belkin at all. I use my PCMCIA N card in hotels
from NY to LA, ATL to SEA never a problem. I have a Belkin "G" USB adapter
on this PC 150 feet from the router. The router is in my office, which is
an out-building. I'd sure hate to buy another router as there are people
with Ipaq WIFI problems that own routers from every manufacturer of routers
on this planet.
I've been using HP handheld devices since the first version of CE. I really
think HP made a very big marketing mistake when the put WIFI handhelds on
the market. Not being sure what reseller margin is on these devices, I'd
estimate that HP is making a profit of about $50 maybe $100 per unit.
Hardly worth the effort. I won't buy HP product again... simply for the way
they have treated me or ignored me.
The Belkin router just had a firmware update installed last week. I suspect
the programmers have moved on to something else.
I'll have some time, (hopefully) tomorrow to "play" with the Ipaq WIFI
settings and will be in touch with Belkin level 3 support. I'll share my
findings. Hopefully I can bring this to something other than... HP and
Belkin pointing their fingers at one another.
I'm the one that's paying the price... not them.
Tnx

Well I've been a long time iPAQ customer, Netgear has been a real problem.computing
The problem IMHO is windows XP and other flavors of windows compensate or
permit things that break the rules. So in my honest opinion hardware
manufactures write programs that work with windows XP and not necessarily
work with the standards or rules. Pocket PCs simply don't have the
power of a PC. So they play by the rules, and expect the things theyconnect
to to do so as well. I had one of the first Belkin pre N routers and preN
Cardbus cards. It was not reliable in my Sony PictureBook, it keptdropping
the connection. I returned it. Tried another one about 6 months later, andto
had a different set of problems. I have some other wireless router around
here. I've got two from two different makers that always seem to connect,
anything. Including most iPAQ from the 39xx to the hx4705. I've seen theseconnect
same iPAQ fail to connect to Netgear, in fact there is an old Netgear
wireless router that almost always needs to be put in static mode to
to a Pocket PC. Most of the time in a few months the wireless routerto
manufacture will come out with a new firmware and it will then work. I
believe once I also needed to update the iPAQ rom on one device to get it
connect to the new firmware on a Linksys router. Almost always it's arouter
firmware upgrade that makes it work.everyone

HP provided a lot of misinformation and most everyone there has an
attitude.
I did have an interesting experience with Belkin today. After about
only(3) hours on hold and trying to get connected to level three support,
to keep being disconnect or hung-up on, the guy on the phone tells
canabout"You're connected to India, you need to be connected to Mexico.
There's
no
third level support in India." So he gives me the Mexico number.
Boy has the world changed.
I've thought all along that the DHCP process was suspect but thought
the
Ipaq was struggling with receiving from the router.
No key, all security for the moment is off.
If I config. manually with the device do I turn off DHCP? And what
worththe other four devices (computers) that are accessing the network?
I've not linked this PCC to my computer as I have another PCC linked
already
and didn't want to commingle the two devices. Is vxUtil going to be
the effort?
Tnx

I expect you won't get much help out of either manufacturer, but I

that some early PPCs did have issues with the DHCP process with

Take a look at vxUtil and vxIPConfig at
