I can tell you with my devices (not HP, but still) if I set to G only
everything looks fine but I can't pass traffic, no pings, can't find sites.
Don't recall if DHCP got good addresses. Don't know of a PPC off-hand that
supports G. I bet the HP folks are right and it is B only so you need to be
in B or mixed on the AP.
Turn the encryption off for a short while and see if it works. If it does at
least you have isolated the problem.

Eight days of config. nightmare and running...
My Belkin Pre N router now shows my Ipaq 5915 as connected. (Per the DHCP
Client List). This took eight days. The HP Tech Support folks kept
telling
me the Ipaq 5915 is "B" only. Once I changed the settings on my router
setup software to "G" only. The Belkin router now show the Ipaq as
connected.
This is cause for major celebration! What a truly amazing accomplishment!
What a minute... <pause> ...the Ipaq 5915 says "SEARCHING" under the
Status.
The MAC address is listed but no IP address. And then of course after
considerable waiting up comes a "BAD" address 169.x.x.x.
Belkin tells me that the "BAD" address is due to WEP or WAP encryption but
there is no encryption. It's turn off and the network shows in the Ipaq
as
*not* having any security. (No little padlock).
So... this is where I need help.
Anyone know why my Ipaq 5915 is showing as connected on the router
software (a truly amazing accomplishment) but not connect on the Ipaq 5915
software. I've config'd the Ipaq per Marc
Cogan's published instructions updated by Doff Julie for WM5.
I get this feeling that I'm close...
Any config. ideas?
