I agree that HP devices have had their share of problems, but, being here on an ongoing basis, don't think there are any oems that have not had a similar level of device problems to deal with.
The 19xx series was discontinued a long time ago and for a major firm to continue to vend it without any type of support or cautions, especially with such a limited oem warranty is less than ethical.
In addition to that, the op states;
"They (HP) said there was supposed to be a sticker on the outside of the
box which explained the 90 day warranty. THERE WAS NO STICKER and the sign at Staples STILL says one year limited warranty."
....which further implicates Staples as the originator of this specific buyer's problem.
fwiw, I was asked to help with prepping a 19xx for sale a few days ago, and after a quick look turned up prices from $35 (used) to $75 (new) my advice was to not spend to much time or any money in selling this particular device.
