Re: Crippled Bluetooth stack on Dell Axim x51v

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Wow some strong sentiments there. Many valid points, but I'd like to offer
some thoughts, if for no other reason, than just to present a little softer
view.

First off, I don't consider Dell's, or many other PPCs BT stacks broken or
crippled. They do not support a complete set of what is defined in the BT
specifications, or maybe even not everything MS supports in the overall
specifications. They are not there because they were not put there. I am
just not going attribute the omission, to malice on the part of Dell. From
the beginning of PPCs or PDAs of any sort for that matter, the capabilities
desired by folks have always fallen short of what has been delivered.
Sometimes just by a technological shortfall, sometimes more a lack of vision
on the part of the OEM as to the possible uses. Sometimes cost is the
factor. You can't always put everything into a box and still sell it for
what it cost you to build it. Supporting a BT profile is more than just
dropping in the BT bits, there are certainly ramifications to the rest of
the code as well which must be developed and tested. It's nice that some
folks have the ability, and desire, to try to improve on what Dell
delivered. I'm sure no one would be pleased however if Dell delivered the
update with the same disclaimer that the 'hobbyists" have.

I figure the reason that the BT stack on current PPCs is so limited is
because BT peripherals weren't a dime a dozen when the design phase for the
units was going on. It's been in just the last year that we have really had
any diversity and value in BT stereo headphone systems. Before that, if you
wanted one, you were going to pay $250 for a set. Now you can pick them up
for under $100...with headset/handsfree as well. How many complainers even
own a set? (I have 4).

As far as tech support lying to you..well...they aren't always kept in the
loop as they should be, either with things that are happening and those that
aren't. Wouldn't surprise me if some of the 'words you wanted to hear'
weren't the result of badgering till you heard them. I've heard some pretty
tall stories and belligerent customers, standing in return lines in person.
I can imagine what some of those folks have to put up with on the phone. I'm
not adverse to getting what I can out of tech and customer support, but I
don't get incensed when they don't come through with special deals just for
me. I've never had a big issue with Dell, or HP for that matter, when
something was 'broken'. Not sure what you expect tech or customer support to
do for something that wasn't included in the first place, unless you got a
manual or boxtop that says "includes A2DP"...without a disclaimer that says
'maybe, maybe not'. :(

Well anyway, like I said, I have 4 A2DP capable headsets, and some PPCs that
work with them, some because they should, some because they are hacked, and
some that don't. I just don't see getting spun up like it is a violation of
my constitutional rights, on those that don't support it.
