Re: Planet WRT-414, how to connect two computers

Your router gets a WAN IP address. For example 205.250.218.148
This is what your Service Provider will give you. I would recommend that you
use the actual MAC address of your router rather than a MAC address of one
of your computers on your LAN. You do not have to keep changing your MAC
addresses that your Service Provider uses.
The rest of your set up will have nothing to do with your service provider.
As long as you can get one WAN IP address that your router uses, you can use
your router to allow several other computers on the LAN to get Internet
access.
Your computers on the LAN will not get Internet Addresses that can be
directly accessed from the internet. The router reroutes Internet address
requests to the correct computer using its DHCP client list.
Your router will have a Local IP address as well, for example 192.168.2.1 or
192.168.1.1. That would be its home page address, for example
http://192.168.1.1 (or whatever address yours is set to) should bring up the
login page to your router.
The 192.168... addresses are non Internet addresses, reserved for Local IP
addresses only.
Your computers connected to the router will get addresses in the range
192.168.2.2 ... 192.168.2.255, (or 192.168.1.2 thru 192.168.1.255 for
example) . Or what ever range you tell your router to allow (through your
routers configuration page).
Your router will keep a DHCP Client List that will reroute the internet
traffic from the internet to the correct computer on your LAN, and
visa/versa.

I am assuming that you only have one Router/LAN network device in your
setup.
I have 2 routers in my setup, and sometimes I have to manually configure the
IP addresses of a computer to use the IP range of the router that has the
WAN IP address. That is; I have to change from "Obtain an IP address
automatically" to "Use the following IP address". I also have to change
"Obtain DNS server address automatically" to "Use the following DNS server
address", then fill in the necessary information.

If you use the command "ipconfig /all" in a dos/cmd window you can get info
about your IP connection. For example this is what mine shows.

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : 3Com Gigabit LOM (3C940)
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0C-6E-53-C4-77
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.25
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : fe80::20c:6eff:fe53:c47a%4
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1

My IP Address "192.168.2.25" is the local IP, and my router will use this so
my computer will get access to the Internet.

When I set up my router as a DHCP server then I don't get Internet access
at all. Only if DHCP is disabled then is OK for one computer.
Provider give me automaticly IP address with his DHCP server.

How ISP don't give IP address to my router and router give IP address to
my LAN?
Situation is that ISP look MAC address of LAN netw.adapter and give it IP
address. I asking where is there WRT-414!?

And ISP give only one MAC address :(.
