Yes, this is possible, you can access OWA through SSL, typing https in the
address. I have users that access the network remotely on a regular basis. A
VPN is definetly the way to go, and it is really easy to set up on the PPC:
Pocket IE will bring up the login etc, but it is hard to use OWA on the
hx4700 because of the screen size. Not to talk you out of what you want to
do, but it is much easier (for the user) to use OMA instead of OWA, or to
just sync with exchange server remotely.

Here are a couple instructions: First off, I will assume that you are
running SBS2003 and it is using the builtin firewall features and that you
are not behind ISA.

If you allow OMA access, then the user could simply enter
https://[ServerExtIP]/oma

The user is then prompted to log in.

OMA is a simple quick text access to outlook that users could even access
from a cell phone.

To sync remotely, the PPC will need the root certificate of the server:

You can export the root certificate of your server and install it on the
PPC. Just drag-and-drop the certificate anywhere on the PPC, I advise my
users to keep it in the File Store or other non-volitile portion of memory.
Once the certificate is on the PPC, just double-tap and it will install
itself.

Create VPN settings on the PPC
Settings --> Connections --> Connections Icon --> Edit my VPN Servers

Just create a new VPN connection.
The Host Name/IP should be external or public IP address of your server.
In VPN type, select PPTP.
Fill in the rest of the informattion.

Now, when the PPC is connected via wireless, and you tap on the "Connected"
icon (double arrows) at the top of the screen, you will see the name of your
VPN connection and a link to establish the VPN connection.

After the VPN connection is authenticated, and you tap on the connected icon
at the top of the screen, you will see that you are connected to your
internal network.

If you use vxIP or something similiar, you will see that you have an IP of
your internal network (assuming that your server is dishing IPs out via DHCP)

If the user has the server settings set up in ActiveSync, the user can then
sync emails, contacts, and calendar, as well as browse the internal network.

Of course, there are other settings along the way, but nothing difficult.

This will be easy if your SBS system is normal, I mean, if you followed the
To Do List and nothing funky is happening to your server -- maybe 10 minutes
to get up and running (in my experience anyway).

Let me know if you get error messages, I can usually get through them pretty
quickly.

Hope this helps,
brandon
