i have the same trouble so i'm stick with a h3970 (i had a 3630) and a
pcmcia jacket. I remember that 54xx family is also compatible with the old
pcmcia jacket. Anyways, the 3970 is enough good for me (wm2003, 3970 with
ppc2002 stink!) not enough for games but still good for anything else.

In any case, the "newest models" have not more that some extra features
(bluetooth, sdio port, wireless), really there not are a significant speed
into a old-model (strongarms) and a newest model (xscale), they are only
noticed in games but for games you can buy a gba. The more fancy and
useable new feature is the vga screen, if you don't care about it, then you
can think to stay with you old 3870 or see a model not-so-new (and
expensive).
