Take a look at Jeyo Mobile Extender. http://www.jeyo.com/extender.asp I
reviewed this a while back
(http://www.clintonfitch.com/reviews/jeyo/mext-2-0/default.asp) and it works
quite well at what you are needing - along with a few other features.

I'm currently running a HTC EVDO smartphone through my USB port using
Active Sync and it all works OK

I'm looking for some software that I can use to type in SMS messages into
my PC and have them sent out through my smartphone.
