a soft reset is essentially a reboot... it should not have any negative impact on the device other than the time needed for it to complete the (very long) wm5 reboot.
If you have a reasonable battery power off timeout (i.e. 5 min or less) consider simply pressing the reset button when you pull it off of the charger and put it in the case to power down 5 min after the reboot.
In addition, soft resets are a good thing... assures max memory, speed, _reliability_ for at least a few minutes ;-)
