I had a problem that sounds a bit like yours. My MDA Compact was fine until
I recharged it. During recharging the charge level would go up, and when it
was done I'd take it off the charger. A few minutes later the device would
wake up to tell me the battery was empty and it was running on the backup
battery. Soft resetting a few times would usually (but not always) convince
the battery it was full again. In the end mine turned out to be a faulty
battery, easily diagnosed by borrowing a battery and charger.
Your symptoms aren't quite the same. However if the device is in warranty,
then I'd be asking your supplier to exchange the charger and the battery. If
that isn't feasible then see if you can borrow them.
