No the GSM side of things should be pretty stable, might be worth checking
the ROM version you have there you can get that from device info in
settings there are 2 new version (with and without MMS) on orange.co.uk
under the your phone option.

You might want to try the Movian VPN client from certicom
http://www.certicom.com/index.php?action=product,mvpn that might help you
out with your firewall/VPN issue.

Yes the device is Pocket PC 2003 its not second edition which has a few
advantages like the ability to flick the screen landscape and a host of
core changes.

As for Fax software in the past I've used KSE TruFax and that has been ok
they have a new version for the XDA2/M1000 @

On the .exe front, generally if you have a .exe its to be delivered to the
device via ActiveSync on the desktop if its a .cab then you can install it
directly onto the device.
