Not by clicking on them in the standard file explorer, correct. It's a
file explorer deficiency rather than a WMP issue.

Correct.

Correct. You can also make ASX playlists pointing to audio files on
network shares, and that will work (if the playlist is formatted
correctly).

Correct, the files will open with whatever program is associated with
the file type, WMA by default will open in WMP.

No. TCPMP can play WMA (and WMV) files on Windows Mobile 2003 (and
presumably WM5) devices, I believe it uses the same libraries as WMP
to do this, and so is compatible with the same types of Windows Media
files as WMP. Also I believe TCPMP will suffer the same issue as WMP
when opening files via the default file explorer, since as I say,
that's actually an issue with the file explorer.

Correct

Can't comment

Can't comment on this one either, I know nothing about WMS. I can tell
you that I have a setup at home that allows me to stream my music
collection via the wireless (or wired) network to anywhere in the
house, or indeed anywhere with an internet connection if I wish, with
full control, ability to play any file, folder or playlist, etc.
However you said you want to use the standard Microsoft apps, this
setup does not, so I won't tell you more about it unless you ask.
