Could i write a PPC program to use IR port for transfer file without using IrDa Standard?thanks

I would like to write a PPC program to communicate with a device, which is a
Microcontroller unit (8051), and i will add a Infrared transceiver to the
8051 as interface to communicate with my PPC program.

Is it possible?

8051->Infrared transceiver (without chip for Infrared encode/decode) to send
file to a PPC program via its IR port.
