In Activesync's Connection Settings, make sure the box that allows
Activesync
to use USB or serial is checked, and select the virtual serial port your
Bluetooth adapter uses from the drop down list.

I am starting from scratch again (devices and ports deleted on laptop
as well as omnia). I turned bluetooth on and discoverable on both
devices. Next, on my Omnia I selected the option "add device". After
searching for a while my omnia found the laptop. Then I clicked "next"
after which my omnia asked a passcode. After entering passcode my
laptop gave a note telling that a device is trying to connect. On my
laptop I entered the same passcode after which I got the message that
the device was successfully connected but I unchecked the checkbox
"turn discovery off" on my laptop because I do not want to make
anything invisible yet.
Now on my omnia's partnership settings window I cannot see the
activesync entry yet so I'm going to set a port. In the omnia it says
"to set up a com port, tap new outgoing port" but I do not see this
line so I cannot make a port. So then I go to my laptop's bluetooth
settings screen where I click "add" then "incoming(the device
initiates connection". Found new hardware dialog box appears with a
note saying "standard serial over bluetooth link". "the device is
installed and ready to use" and COM6 (incoming) is added in the
settings menu of the laptop. Now on the laptop's activesync
connections settings window I can enable checkbox "allow conections to
the following" and select COM6 from the dropdown list. Then on the
omnia, I tap on my laptop's name and hit refresh button and activesync
appears which I check on and click save. Then on my omnia's activesync
I select "connect via bluetooth" after which the sync is established.
Fine, missions accomplished? No, Microsoft thinks this has been too
easy. For instance, after not having used the laptop for a while, I
start it up again and want to sync again. So I enable bluetooth on
both devices including visibility on, then I open activesync on the
laptop and in connection settings I check that all checkboxes are
enabled and that COM6 still appears in the list. OK great, then in the
omnia I open activesync and select "connect via bluetooth". It does
not connect: "cannot connect with the pc because the port is not
available...blablabla". So still in the omnia I go to connection
settings, I select my laptop's name and hit refresh button after which
the activesync checkbox disappears (just below "select services to use
from this device")! Then I go to the COM PORTS tab where I cannot add
an outgoing com port! So now comes the amazing part: I go to
activesync connection settings on my laptop and I DISABLE "allow
connection to the following...COM6" and click ok. Then I go back in
the settings and select it ON again (ENABLE COM6 connections). Now in
the omnia partnership settings I hit the refresh button and whoopsa,
there is the activesync checkbox again below the "select services to
use from this device"! I select it on and hit save. Now I go to the
COM PORTS tab again on the omnia and hey, now I DO see an entry
labeled "new outgoing port". I click it, highlight the laptop's name
below "select the device you want to add", click next, select COM6
from the pulldown menu and select "secure connection" checkbox. Click
finish. Then still on the omnia I open activesync and select "connect
via bluetooth" and I get the error message "cannot find an existing
bluetooth partnership with a pc that supports activesync. Would you
like to set up a partnership now?" WTF!!!

You've got something weird going on.  It's not normally this complicated.

BTW, you do NOT have to create an outgoing port on the Omnia to connect to
the PC.  Activesync doesn't require it.  The outgoing port is for SPP
(Serial Port Profile) connections, like to an external BT GPS puck.
Creating an outgoing port probably won't hurt anything, but it isn't
required.

I have found that BT over Activesync played much better on my PC when I used
the Microsoft BT drivers on my PC's dongle.  I use an older D-Link DBT-120
that uses a different stack (Widcomm I believe), which made connecting
difficult.  The MS stack doesn't support all the device's functions (like
stereo audio) IIRC, but I really only bought the BT dongle for syncing cell
phones (first an old Nokia 3650) and later my WinMo devices.  (Now I don't
use Activesync so I rarely need to connect via BT except maybe to transfer a
few small files.  Anything longer and I'll connect by cable, or browse the
PC's network share via WiFi from the device and cut-and-paste the files.)

I've been told you have to sync via cable at least once before you can
setup
BT sync for "security" reasons

Yes, the first time I synced via a usb cable and that was ok but I
don't fancy carrying cables with me all the time.
I hope someone can help me out here. Thanks.

As a test, I'd delete the bluetooth device in Device Manager and reinstall
it with the Windows default drivers instead of manufacturer-specific
drivers.  That might do the trick.

Thanks for the tips. Strange thing is that I didn't change anything in
my bluetooth settings and today I managed to connect my smartphone to
the laptop via bluetooth without problems. I even disconnected and
reconnected about 15 times in a row and each time activesync worked.
Weird things these blue waves! I hope it stays this way but if it
doesn't, I'll revert to windows drivers.
