Re: ActiveSync 3.8 cannot connect to iPAQ.

Hi Raj.

Yes, I am running XP Media Edition. I have Norton Internet Security
installed, but I did confirm that it was still setup to allow ActiveSync to
operate per the instructions that I received viathe Windows Mobile Site.
However, just to be sure, I turned off all my security while I tried to
connect but was still unable to do so. There was a Microsoft update about the
same time, but I am not sure if it was before or after I started having the
problem. I did try other USB ports on my PC and I am getting the message
after I try to connect (without success) saying: "Your mobile device has not
setup a connection with this computer. To setup a connection, start
ActiveSync and follow the on-screen instructions." Which of course is what I
had already done. I do find it strange that my Device Manager indicates that
I do have a connection, but the Safe Hardware Removal dialog does not show
the connection. I seem to remember that it did show up before I had this
problem.

Hi Dave,

Are you running any firewall software? From the way you describe, it appears
the driver is getting installed correctly. I assume you are referring to Win
XP here. However, some application appears to be blocking the connection.
Did you perform any new updates or install new software prior to this issue?

Since I last contacted you in early November I have not had any problems
connecting and sychronizing my iPAQ 3850. However, a couple of days ago I
get
"your device was not connected" and I have spent the time since then
trying
to get it to work again. I have reinstalled ActiveSync about a dozen
times,
deleted temp files, tried safe mode, rebooting many times, checked the
registry and everything else you have suggested in the past. I have tried
a
completely clean install and lost the partnership in the process, which I
cannot get back. I believe my install is OK at the moment and suspect the
USB
connection - I am guessing.

When I run ActiveSync after the completed install I get "your device was
not
connected" and no partnerships, but I also get "USB is available". When I
connect my iPAQ to the PC via the USB cable there is a double beep, which
I
had when it was working properly. However, the device does not show up in
the
"safely remove hardware" dialog (not even as an unknown). Device Manager
does
show the device under "Windows CE USB Devices" as "Compaq iPAQ USB Sync".
I
am not sure if this is correct as I believe it was under Universal Serial
Bus
controllers before (although I am not certain). To me it appears as though
there should be a connection, but I cannot get the icon to turn green. I
am
obviously missing something. Does anyone have any ideas?
