Hello
Firstly, ENORMOUS thanks to Todd All*** for such an extensive set of EXTREMELY helpful options and so clearly explained, FAR more than I expected and VERY much appreciated.
It would both PAIN and bankrupt me to buy outlook, especially as I discovered 'openoffice' yesterday, JUST moments before I nearly paid for OPAL office (which some believe is a scam, others don't? Something to do with Sunsystems...I digress...I'm good at that!)
I REALLY like and think I will most likely go with your first suggestion re: mail2web.com. (although the paid hosted Exchange account is VERY appealing!) BOTH answer my Q TOTALLY! :D
Having just upgraded to an (apparently) superfast ADSL2+ so internet access isn't a problem ATM.
(FYI...Our 8mbps BT unlimited service gave us 2mbps for £27 monthly! Our £10 o2 service claims 16mbps ADSL2+. Have reached 4mbps, so 'happier' & still in first two weeks of service. Can be 'forced' (throttled) if need be, apparently, or we can drop to 8mbps for£7.50!! NOT 'promoting', just pointing out shocking diffs!)
I also LOVE the idea of being able to access 'half my life' from any PC!
XP PC came complete WITH XP Office 2002 so I didn't realise I couldn't sync with OE!! (managed NOT to know that for almost FIVE years, rather shamefully!) but you've saved me from exploring that avenue which would have been time consuming and wasteful, so thank you AGAIN!
Did fail to mention that I'd already connected with WMDC when I plugged in the Axim (sorry!) but found, as mentioned in several other people's posts, numerous options not available (not having a version of Outlook installed on this system, with which to sync those particular items, obviously!).
If anyone is interested, I did manage to drop my NUMEROUS (five years worth!) of Outlook mails, folders and contacts into OE in XP, then save and export, then REload them into Windows Mail (thankfully) with a little 'forum help' on 'how to', AFTER the 'transfer settings' didn't do it (not realising that there would be NO 'OE' on Vista to sync TO). This info is probably beneath most already here, BUT, I'd be happy to share if needed.
I must admit, I DID know there was a back up facility on the AXIM X5, I'm just stupid enough NOT to have used it BEFORE the transfer (: \); I WILL learn from my mistakes! (mental note to self to actually DO it properly this time!)
BTW, when I let BOTH batteries die (stupidly) and then tried to sync....the XP (few weeks back) made a NEW partnership and I lost everything, but, admittedly, my OWN fault...! (but nothing to do with Vista!)
I've been able to d/l some of the same prog installation files in .cab form and they're working on the Axim JUST as they should be. I shall continue to scour the web for the rest! (many are now 'pricey SUPER DOOPER' versions, which, once upon a time, were 'beta test progs' and FREE. Ah well!)
Sadly, the progs for my Axim, for which I still HAD installation files, ALL needed to be loaded through 'activesync' (& make a BIG 'no no' deal in their 'readme' files about ONLY loading through Windows desktop/laptop and using activesync vs 3.8 or 4.xx or don't try to install or else...!)
I'm guessing I can't really install those progs THROUGH WMDC that would be 'tempting fate' (Vista...SUCH alien territory....started with BBC basic... line 10.... lol!) and I'm guessing that you meant that I can load .cab and other Axim progs via WMDC?
Either way, you've been EXTREMELY helpful, thank you SO much.
I am SEVERELY tempted to just cough up monthly (esp. having saved on ISP!) for the hosted Exchange account as the £ is strong against $$s at the mo (hoping it's the same price for us in UK?!) and the idea of 'comfy slippers' Outlook in some form DOES appeal (don't quite see how it can be free, but ALL your other advice has been spot on, so, will take your word for it!

Have also now installed Total commander, a multi-functioning file explorer & mobi pocket (as adobe acrobat ppc reader clashes with the version on Vista for some unknown reason?)
MANY thanks for ALL help and for any other advice offered. Should all keep me busy for a while!
AND, thank you for your patience!!!!! (seriously!)
