Would like to know...IS it possible to sync Axim X5 (power version) running PPC 2003 (aka WM 2003 I THINK??!) with EITHER the calendar AND/OR the 'installed' WINDOWS MAIL? (since I own the disk to Office 2002 XP the program, which, I believe, is now bordering on, if not already 'obsolete'? Security patch wise, I think it is? : (
No. Just as you couldn't sync with the Outlook Express software included with XP, you can't sync with Calendar or Mail on Vista either. Only synching with outlook is supported.
Office 2002 is quasi-supported on Vista- IIRC, you'll be harrased about e-mail passwords continually, but the software will run.
And, if NOT, is there any real 'comparable' alternative either as a calendar and/or mail client which WILL sync with an Axim X5? Can I run ANY version of 'activesync' on Vista, maybe in XP SP2 compatibility mode? I'm LOST!! Vista is a whole new world to me.
Activesync has been superceeded (on Vista) with the new "Windows Mobile Device Center" (or "WMDC.") WDMC will allow you to sync (with Outlook), install software, etc. just as Activesync did.
If Outlook XP doesn't do it for you under Vista, you have a few options- obviously upgrading to Outlook 2003 or '07 would be the best, but most expensive option, so as an alternative, you could try a free Exchange account from mail2web.com- this syncs the contacts and calendar on your device with the mail2web server, and allows you to access it on a desktop or laptop with OWA (Outlook Web Access), which is essentially a stripped down version of Outlook that "runs" in your browser. You go to your personal mail2web OWA web page and see an Outlook-like interface that displays the information in the browser window. The disadvantage, of course, is that it's slower than accessing them on the PC itself, and requires a connection to the internet. The advantage is that your contacts and calendar info are accessable from any internet-connected PC, and are stored safely on someone ELSE's system (the mail2web server) so even if your hard disk gives up the ghost, your info is still there.
The best of both worlds is a paid, hosted Exchange account ($15/month from mail2web, but 1&1.com offers them for $7/month.) This has all of the same features of a free Exchange account, but also includes a copy of Outlook 2k3 or 2k7, and allows the desktop to sync with the Exchange server as well, so you can use Outlook "offline" as well as online. A year of 1&1's hosted Exchange is cheaper than a copy of Outlook.
Final question...having foolishly wiped my Axim (NEVER allow both batteries to die!!!) is there ANY way I can replace all of my LOVELY progs such as Netfront, Wififofum and other 'fiddle about with Axim' type stuff WITHOUT XP or activesync' as I've scoured the web and can find virtually nothing?
Yes, just install the apps on Vista and they'll get added to the Axim via WMDC.
Remember the Axim has a built-in backup program that will let you backup to an SD or CF memory card, or even the built-in storage area of the Axim (which "survives" dead batteries!) I used to backup mine every few weeks in case of disaster. Another of advantage of the Exchange account is that you can restore your contacts or calendar anywhere your PPc has an internet connection. Even if completely wiped clean, you can enter your Exchange settings into Activesync (on the Axim) and it will download the updated calendar and contacts from the server.
MANY thanks for ALL helpful suggestions and time taken to get through mail!!
My pleasure...
