Re: Two-Way Synchronization: What's The Problem?

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Thank you for pointing me to that KB article, it worked great. However, I am
still having the problem of getting Outlook to work again. After I install
it and attempt to open it, it asks me which profile I want to use, and has
the one I used before uninstalling Outlook selected. When I click OK, it
asks about several files I was told to delete in the following KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826491/en-us

I follow the steps Outlook gives to do what I think is recreate these files,
but it eventually gets to the point where it shows the following error:

Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Unable to open the Outlook window.
The set of folders could not be opened.

I did a search on this error and found the following KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831019/en-us

Even though this article is about this exact error message, the resolution
did not seep to make any difference. Any ideas about why else I could be
getting this error? Thanks.

NOTE: The reason I went the extreme route (hopefully I didn't miss any steps
there) was to be safe. It is no danger of losing data to me, because the
only thing I really use Outlook and ActiveSync for is to synchronize my
Hotmail Calendar and Contacts with my iPAQ, the only reason I have Outlook
installed is as a sort of "middle-man", since I do not know of any direct
synchronization method between the two.

If I understand this correctly 'it appeared to be running, it would not
let me open it into a window', you can't actually get AS 3.8 to come up
as a program, true?

If so the KB below notes a couple of files that likely need to be removed
when un-installing AS and trying to downgrade. I'd un-install AS from the
control panel, delete those files and try re-installing.

Wish you hadn't gone the extreme route to start with. Just dumping the
partnerships first might have helped. Maybe you did that.

I uninstalled Outlook and ActiveSync, and did a hard reset on my device. I
then installed ActiveSync 3.8, but even though the icon showed up in the
notification area and it appeared to be running, it would not let me open
it into a window, and I therefore could not create a partnership. Do I
need to somehow manually delete the previously existing partnership?
Obviously ActiveSync is pretty useless as far as synchronization goes if I
cannot create a partnership. Any ideas? Thanks.

That is a fairly odd problem. The setup you have is perfectly fine,
though I would not have upgraded AS with a 2215 and Windows XP. AS 3.8
worked just fine (better in many opinions), AS 4 and up was only
required for WM5 and up.
Regardless. I would try deleting the partnership and re-establishing it.
You need to delete the partnership on the desktop. If you are
comfortable with it, you might hard reset the device, but that is really
a last resort, as it takes it back to out-of-the-box, and you get to set
it up from scratch.

You might try running scanpst.exe to see if maybe there is something
buggered up in Outlook.

Again, your setup should work fine. I don't expect that upgrading
anything would serve much purpose and maybe even cause you further
aggravations. The 2215 is a bit outdated as you say, but understand
there are not too many options now that aren't converged
devices...include a cell phone capability. HP has brought out some new
devices, so if you are interested in upgrading look at the new iPaq 100
and 200 models.

I am using an HP iPAQ h2215 PocketPC and Outlook 2003, along with
ActiveSync 4.5. If I create the event or appointment using my device, it
synchronizes perfectly fine, even if I modify it in Outlook. However, if
the event or appointment is created in Outlook, it will not synchronize.
I have been unable to find a reason for this, and I would appreciate any
suggestions anyone has that may solve this problem. Something else that
I have been wondering that I have not yet received an answer for is
whether or not buying a device that uses Windows Mobile 6 would help (if
the problem is on the device end), or if upgrading to Outlook 2007 would
help (if the problem is on the desktop end). I would be perfectly
willing to purchase a new device (mine is somewhate old), but if it is
avoidable, I would prefer to not need to upgrade to Outlook 2007
(although I would be willing to do it if I knew it would solve the
problem). Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
