Thank you for the reply. As it happens I did come across your pocketpcfaq
site and have had a read/search but I see no mention at all about the
progress bar bug (1) below. I have turned off advanced network functionality
on my pocket pc so I'm now connecting with PPP rather than RAPI (the latter
was to unreliable and resulted in connection drops). I'm using my
motherboards native VIA USB 1.1 ports (although I have a USB 2.0 Full Speed
NEC chipped PCI card in the wings for installation). This means the USB
speed difference should not affect file transfer speeds in (2) to the extent
that occurs. My pocket pc is USB 2.0 Full speed compatible so hopefully
things will be faster both ways with the installation of the card and I hope
the limiting factor will then become the microSD cards write speed.
While I'm using my Windows XP desktop machine, I expect the software on it
to behave in a standardised way. Just because I'm accessing a Pocket PC, I
don't expect my desktop OS to behave any differently. This means I expect
the plus sign expandable branch in the left pane of Windows Explorer and (at
least) the ability to select a suitable memory card icon in Windows Explorer
if it's not automatically displayed that way. I found the way of stopping
the wmv files being converted, thanks. It's a pity that wasn't default
behaviour on installation of Activesync.
Any idea how I can notify Microsoft about these to try and get them
corrected. I don't expect to have to pay just to provide feedback so an
email address or webform which will work with an OEM version of Windows
(rather than referring me to the PC maker which would be irrelevant) would
be ideal.

I'm using Activesync 4.5 on my Windows XP Pro SP2 PC to connect to my HTC
TyTN II Pocket PC via USB. I've found the following problems:
1. The progress bar for file transfers is useless in that it will start
creeping up as the file goes across and then jump back to the start
(possibly several times) before the file is finally fully transferred.
Even then the file may successfully end the transfer when the progress
bar is only part way across.
2. File transfer using Activesync is far slower than if I take out my
phones memory card, put it in a reader and transfer the files via the
same USB port. There seems to be an unnecessary layer of complexity
slowing things down.
Yes there is a signficant difference between using your device with
ActiveSync and using a flash card reader. For example Windows Mobile USB
devices only operate at 12 megabits (USB 1.1) while card readers operate
at 400 megabits (USB 2.0). Also, there is signficant overhead in using
ActiveSync. It is using a special protocol called RAPI which provides
the functionality to copy data back and forth.
3. Windows Explorer on my PC displays my Pocket PCs storage card as a
folder even though viewing the memory card in WM6 shows a nice icon
signifying its a memory card.
This is normal. The OEM has decided to change the icon and name on the
device while ActiveSync does not use that. The default name is Storage
Card in ActiveSync.
4. Along the same lines, Windows Explorer doesn't indicate my mobile
device has expandable folder branches with + signs in the left pane (like
in other Windows Explorer browsing). I can only expand the branches by
double clicking the folders in the right pane.
This is by design. The way it works is designed to use the clicking
functionality that the device supports.
5. If I use Activesync to transfer videos across to the TyTN II, the
video is converted (taking ages) and the final quality is very poor. If I
just put the same wmv file directly on the storage card using my card
reader/writer and then update Windows Media Player Mobiles library to
find it, the file quality is fine and it plays OK.
You can choose whether or not to convert the video. This is done in the
Tools - Options settings where you decide what to do with each file
extension.
Has anyone else experienced these problems and how do I officially notify
Microsoft so they can fix them? Is there an Activesync feedback email
address or webform? TIA
