Re: What happens if I break the connection during activesync in WM5 ?

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I've not seen this on WM5 so far but on my WM2003 SE2... I have this
experience.

My prior response was for WM5 devices and greater. There was a huge design
change between the WM2003 and WM5 release, including the migration from CEDB
to EDB databases.

I dare not try it but what would happen if I remove
the connection ?

On WM5 devices and greater, for email, calendar, contacts and tasks, if the
PC is sending the data to the device, the data is thrown away and will be
re-sent to the device the next time it is cradled. Is the device has
successfully received the data, the device will continue to process the
batch until all of the data has been consumed.

What you describe (Transactional Database) is at the System level.
But the application level plays a part.

Correct. When the device receives a batch of items from the PC, a
transaction is opened on the database. After the data is processed, the
transaction is closed and the data is committed to the database.

I sync my machine with my work and home PC. Sometimes, I would see my
whole list of contact start shrinking on my PC and then rebuilt again
during the sync. I dare not try it but what would happen if I remove
the connection ? Would I be left with 1 or 2 contacts ?

Almost, the EDB database is transactional, so if you reset the device
while
processing, those items will be lost and will need to be resent to the
device.

With that being said, it is never a good idea to reset your device. For
performance, there is an underlying RAM layer between the filesystem and
Flash (this doesn't affect the EDB database). If you surprise reset the
device, parts of the uncommitted data will be lost. It is always a good
idea
to shutdown the smartphone or suspend the PocketPC before resetting.

So, if you hit soft reset during the actual updating, you could have a
problem, but breaking communication would not break anything in the
sync
of those four types of items, if I understand you.

For Mail, Calendar, Contacts and Tasks items the device can be removed
at
anytime. The data is sent down to the device in batches of 100 and
then
processed.

In WM2003 SE2, I can select the option so that it only sync on
connection. After that, there is no automatic sync. I have to
manually click the icon to sync.

In WM5, it does not have this option. So what happens if I need to
run and I pull the cable from my smartphone ? Would it corrupt my
data ?

I'm concern as MS took away this feature which I think would help to
safeguard my data from corruption !

Thanks.
