ActiveSync, in case you were still looking for that, rather than Google:

What are the differences between the 'sync through Outlook' and 'direct
sync'?
The 'sync through Outlook' is a two-step process, which requires you to sync
your device with Outlook using ActiveSync, then manually run the
CompanionLink synchronize to transfer your PIM and contact manager data to
the mobile device.
The 'direct sync' is an automatic, one-step process. Whenever your device is
in its cradle, data will be synchronized between your device and your
PIM/contact manager application.
There are certain limitations with the 'direct sync' method. These include:
a.. You cannot sync with Outlook. It only synchronizes with ACT!,
GoldMine, and Lotus Notes
b.. You cannot sync multiple databases
c.. You cannot exclude your personal data from the sync

Good item. I'm sure we'll keep it in mind. I'd never heard of it until
your post (I think I've mentioned that I'm not a Windows Mobile MVP).
You don't need *any* desktop e-mail client to sync with; just simply don't
sync e-mail at all and use Pocket Outlook on the Pocket PC to get your
e-mail straight from the server. I've never used e-mail syncing because
it seems silly to have to wait until my device is plugged into the PC to
get my e-mail when it's so easy to get it straight from the server
over-the-air.
You *did* verify that you don't have Exchange set up *on the device*,
right? You can certainly get to the point of frustration where you want to
try something else rather than ActiveSync, but it seems like, before you
pay for something else, it would make sense to verify that your settings
are actually right. You keep saying that you've checked your Outlook
settings, your ActiveSync settings on the desktop, etc., but you have to
check the device settings to see if it's set up for Exchange and you don't
seem to be trying that.

There's also Companionlink which of course costs money, but seriously
folks,
every "MVP" here has said, "Activesync or nothing" well, seems that's not
really the case is it?
You can use Google calendar, any number of other calendaring tools and

Companionlink to sync those.

For those of us who use Outlook only for email, i can easily think of
nPop,
nPopw for that purpose (freeware), or Eudora.
For those of us who would like to sync just our calendar and contacts,
the
above solutions sound a lot better than ActiveSTINK telling me over and
over
that I have an exchange issue when I never changed a stinking thing in my
current setup. Yet, what's teh solution? HARD RESET? Wipe out the
entire
handset just because the software provided "as is" from M$ is buggy.
Personally, i'd rather go down this road and start expecting to get what
I
pay for. Wait, we don't pay (directly) for ActiveStink, just indirectly
in
lost time and productivity.

I'm running Windows XP, NOT Vista, so Mobile Device Center is not an
option,
but at the same time, I've had so many issues with ActiveSync that I'd

to explore an alternative to this buggy software.

I'm going to install Intellisync tonight. I'm only looking sync my
Contacts/Calendar and Tasks.
I've just had so many issues and now I'm being told error code
85010001
and
that I can't sync with my exchange server but I don't HAVE exchange
server
installed. Something has to sto the headaches.
