Re: Activesync replacement?

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Man, let me tell you, I'd be willing to pay a LOT more than $5 to replace AS.
Between the lost time, effort, energy, and productivity, I think I've spent
a lot more than $5 diagnosing what shouldn't happen between two pieces of
software that were written by the same company to work WITH each other.

It's (again using your car analogy) like saying, We have a car, you want
wheels with that car, sure, just make sure that they fit, oh, they do fit,
well, okay, are they red? No, well, they don't fit then do they?

If this isn't a bug where I've altered absolutely nothing and this behavior
starts showing up 3 days ago and is persistent and there is NO (and I mean
NO, I've searched everywhere for answers) information about fixing it, then
what the heck? Why produce a product that you force people to use and then
give them something that only sometimes works?

WHY WHY?

*sigh*

Look through the AS settings on the device, first. In the ActiveSync
application on the device, choose Menu | Options. Make sure that you agree
with the items shown in the list (the PCs that are shown there).

Next, choose Menu | Add Server Source. Make sure that the server name is
empty, completely, and accept the settings.

Next, choose Menu | Connections. Verify that the settings make sense (USB,
etc.) Verify that the problem still occurs when you connect to the PC.

If that looks fine, but still generates the error when you connect to the PC
with the USB cable, then, on the PC, with the device no longer connected,
delete the partnership. On the device, while disconnected, do the same (via
Menu | Options). If the error occurs again when you connect this 'new'
device to the PC the next time, I think you'll have to do a hard reset of
the Windows Mobile device.

No one is claiming that AS is good, but it is a base technology that is much
easier to use as a base than to try to work out syncing yourself. If 100%
of the people using Windows Mobile would rather pay for a good syncing
program that forget about Windows Mobile and use Palm or something else,
then someone would have done it by now, but that's just not the case. The
engine metaphor is a good one. If you don't like the engine in your Honda,
maybe 0.01% of the people go out and buy a new one and are willing to pay
enough to keep the aftermarket engine guys in business, but you can't buy an
aftermarket engine for the $5 you'd be willing to pay for an AS replacement.
You can buy lots of add-ons for your Honda, exhaust, intake, even turbos and
superchargers, but no one wants to build engine blocks and sell them for
$50, even if the block is the weak link.

Okay, fair enough, I'm not even going to address the monopoly issue,
because
it's not relevant here.

So, if my settings are wrong, and I've changed NOTHING in my setup for
Outlook OR Treo what and where do I look.

Trust me, i do appreciate the help.

And, no, i don't think making the ONLY software that works with the OS is
anything less than a monopoly. that's akin, using your metaphor, to
saying,
you can have any car you want, so long as you ONLY use our engine to run
it.
So, sure, any car in the world, just have to agree to use our engine and
if
you want overdrive or a 5 speed, sorry, you can use what we give you.
We'll
make sure nothing else is compatible with it, we can let other
manufacturers
make different parts for the engine that fit over the engine block, just
not
another engine.

But, again, neither here nor there, just would like to get this solved and
move on with not having to spend so much time trying to diagnose what
shouldn't be an issue out of the clear blue.

I'm not *saying* that you *have* Exchange, just that the device or
ActiveSync is configured to use it. Ever notice that some cars have an
opening on the rear bumper that doesn't seem to serve any purpose? It's
for
a dual exhaust output. Not every model has one, but the base model often
still has that opening. The opening doesn't force there to be a pipe
there,
it just allows there to be a pipe there. If you set ActiveSync to use
Exchange, it doesn't force Exchange to magically appear on your network,
but
it *WILL* cause there to be a problem if you *don't* have it, which is
what
it looks to me like is causing a problem. That is, your *settings* are
wrong.

OF COURSE IT'S NOT A MONOPOLY! However, if you were going to write some
software, let's say a word processor, would you also write an operating
system for the hardware, drivers for every display card, hard disk,
keyboard, mouse, USB chip on Earth in order to make your word processor
not
require any other piece of software? If you did, you'd never finish your
word processor, would you? The people who want to write some special
synchronization software don't write their own basic sync software for
*EXACTLY* the same reason: because they want to add value for their
customers, not ALL the value, just some of the value, and syncing is a
big
job. Microsoft doesn't prevent it from happening, the difficulty of
doing
it prevents it from being done a different way by every software vendor
out
there...

but I DON'T have exchange on either the desktop, running Outlook 2007,
and
the Treo is simply using Activesync and I use FlexMail 2007 to read
mail.

this was working perfectly fine until just a few days ago.

Isn't that a monopoly that MS doesn't allow any other alternatives to
use
to
sync with WM devices?

"Paul G. Tobey [eMVP]" wrote:

There's no other choice. No matter which add-on sync software you
use,
they
will all expect to have ActiveSync running underneath them.

It sounds to me like either AS on the desktop or on the device is
configured
for Exchange and that the problem is caused by that.

I'm running Windows XP, NOT Vista, so Mobile Device Center is not an
option,
but at the same time, I've had so many issues with ActiveSync that
I'd
like
to explore an alternative to this buggy software.

Any suggestions?

I'm going to install Intellisync tonight. I'm only looking sync my
Contacts/Calendar and Tasks.

I've just had so many issues and now I'm being told error code
85010001
and
that I can't sync with my exchange server but I don't HAVE exchange
server
installed. Something has to sto the headaches.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
