Yes it is trying to hit a proxy.
I don't understand how to change the connection between automatic and
internet - except removing the password.
How do I do that?

Is the device trying to hit the proxy? Have you cycled the desktop
ActiveSync connection between "automatic" and internet?

Chris:
I thought about that. FQDN does work...it resolves to the external
address of the router. Which it should. Servername.com resolves to the
External IP of company router.
Either way it is getting to the server.
DNS is configured properly. I am evening starting to use Ethereal and a
hub to sniff the traffic. Nothing conclusive. I don't see any DNS/Netbios
traffic when activesnyc it trying to sync.
(I have another SBS 2003 network at another company setup exact same way.
Using PocketPC's. No problems there.)
Makes no sense. I would bet at this point it is the phone.

Hi,
Sinc your device won't sync in the cradle with the fqdn, I'd look at the
network configuration to make sure that you can use the fqdn internally.
One hack which may work for you is to edit the hosts file
(c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc) to refer to the fqdn and external IP.
Sincerely,

Remember this conversation:
http://hardware.mcse.ms/message246956.html
This exact thing is happening to me. Problem is Netbios name and
servername.local resolve to internal server address - as they should.
Servername.com resolves to public IP address on the router - from
inside.
I have another system setup the same way and I don't have this issue.
The phone is a Verizon Treo 700w.
It will only sync in the cradle if the server name is the Netbios name.
Then activesync changes the settings in the phone to the Netbios name
and the phone won't work off the cradle - won't sync. Also, the phone
gets this error about 10 times a day:
--------------------------------------------------
To: Wireless Sync User
Subject: Automatic Synchronization Suspended
Automatic synchronization to your device has been suspended. Please
switch to your Wireless Sync client and select Sync. Synchronization
will resume once you enter your username and password.
-------------------------------------------------
But it works anyway - off the cradle if the server name is
servername.com.
What is going on?
