Re: PC freezes on connecting an iPAQ hx2490

Thank you Chris,

I have been hoping someone with your knowledge and reputation would get
interested in this.

To your questions:
There were no other devices except a mouse and keyboard. I am not absolutely
sure how the keyboard is connected (the computer is in my office).
I have tried both front ports and one out of the four at the back; no
difference.
There is no hub. The box is connected to a LAN via a swith, with another
computer and our own network printer/scanner/copier on the inside of the
switch.

Something that may be relevant: I had tried to sync my iPAQ via a Belkin
Bluetooth dongle before, but I was only able to exchange files. After many
trials I was not able to resolve port numbers to set up a serial connection.
Remnants of my failed activies may still reside on the desk top although I
have tried to clean the mess up.

Hi,
Have you tried disconnecting all other USB devices? How about using a
different USB port? Are you using a USB hub? Windows Mobile devices don't
work well with USB hubs (including keyboards and monitors with ports).

I have two desk top computers I would like to sync my iPAQ hx2490 with:
At home, with Win 2k pro and ActiveSync 3.8 and connecting through an USB
cradle I have no problems.
At office, Win XP pro and ActiveSync 3.8, I connect through a USB cable
(using the same cable at home everything is OK) and have mixed results as
follows:

If I connect my hand held without prior opening ActiveSync on the desk top
PC, the desk top PC freezes and does not react to mouse, keyboard,
anything I
have tried. Only powering it off and on again wakes up the OS. However, if
Active Sync is open prior to connecting the iPAQ, then in most cases (but
not
always) it syncs OK. When it freezes, it displays a message "One of the
USB
devices has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it ." It further
advises to click on a message to see more details, which is impossible to
do
as everything is frozen solid, meaning the cursor does not move and PC
does
not accept anything from the keyboard, including Crtl + Alt + Del. When I
was
configuring ActiveSync on this computer I checked a box saying that it is
a
second pc. Also, ActiveSync is added to the Windows Firewall exceptions.

Any idea anybody what is going on? Thanks in advance for any help.
