Re: ActiveSync will not sync with pocketpc- will only overwrite

What makes you think this. The default behavior of ActiveSync (or WMDC in
Vista) is to sync. That is, to transfer changes from the device that have
happened most recently to the other device, on an item by item basis. The
only place that there is a selection for one or the other devices to always
be the 'master' is if there is a conflict. That means the same item was
changed on both the PPC and the PC between syncs. It is important to
understand what an item is though. If you change a contact's, phone number
on the PPC, and their birthday, on the PC, one or the other change is going
to be lost. The item in this case is at the contact level. If you change
one contact's number on the PPC and different contact's birthday on the PC,
that is not a conflict, and both those changes will be sync'd to the other
device.

If you are using ActiveSync, you do have the option of being asked when a
conflict occurs, though this really only alerts you to the issue. In WMDC,
the ask option is gone, which is unfortunate, as you no longer are alerted
to the problem. Fortunately, conflicts should not happen very often if you
are in the habit of syncing your PPC when you have made changes on it, or on
the PC.

I have a phone with Windows Mobile and Outlook 2003. Activesync does
not give the option of syncing the two, only overwriting one or the
other. How have others dealt with this, or gotten around it? I
frequently have only my phone, where I input new numbers, tasks,
appts, etc. Not having a sync option is frustrating and seems to
defeat the purpose of Activesync.
