Error 86000108/Contacts greyed out

When I try to synch PC Contacts to Device one way (device to show only what
is on PC) it fails every time. Have performed countless repetitions of
removing pairing from PC and Device plus reinstallations of Active Sync 4.1
and 4.2 to no avail.

Has anyone cracked this yet?

Could it be caused by a recent XP/Office update, as I notice several others
who have recently developed the problem in the last few days after weeks or
more of trouble free synching?
