Hi,

Unfortunately, no information is available whether the Category based sync
feature will be made available in future versions. And the Search feature
you use on the device does not support search only exact phrases or wild
card characters.

If you are interested, drop me an e-mail and I will send you an add-in which
might be useful to filter your contacts while synchronizing your device.

Hi. With ActiveSync 3.x, I was able to filter contacts by category.
However, this feature is not in ActiveSync 4.x, which is very frustrating.

I have over 2,500 contacts in Outlook, but I do not want or need nearly
that many contacts to sync to my PDA (Samsung i730 running Windows Mobile
5.0). In fact, having more than about 1,000 contacts substantially slows
down my PDA and makes voice recognition almost worthless. With ActiveSync
3.x, I was able to filter which contacts were synced with my i730 (e.g., I
could tell it to sync only clients assigned to the category "Clients" as
opposed to the category "Clients-Former"). However, ActiveSync 4.x won't
allow me to filter contacts this way. Thus, I'm stuck manually moving
contacts from my main contacts folder to a different folder, syncing with
my
PDA, and then moving the contacts back to the main contacts folder, which
is
a real pain and prevents me from having real-time synchronization between
Outlook and my PDA.

Is there any chance that Microsoft will bring back the
filter-contacts-by-category feature back for a future version of
ActiveSync?

Also, how can I search for contacts assigned to the category "Clients"
without also having it find clients assigned to categories
"Clients-Former,"
"Clients-Agent for," etc.? Seems like whenever I do a find by category it
will not search for the exact phrase I type in the search field.

Please help! Thank you.

Jay

Hi,

Try the following - create a new Contacts folder in Outlook and select
all
contacts from the default folder (press Ctrl + a), drag and drop the
selection into the new folder. Perform a sync.

Upon sync, since no contacts are available in the default folder,
Contacts
on your device will be erased. Now repeat the action and move the
contacts
from the new folder into the default folder and ActiveSync will sync the
new
set of contacts to your device. Now set the categories that you wish to
sync and click Ok.

I don't want all my Outlook Contacts on my iPaq, but can't make the
Settings
for Contacts in ActiveSync take effect.
Clicked on Contacts > Settings > Sync only those contacts in the
following
selected categories > Unchecked several categories... Apply > OK
Nothing is eliminated on my iPaq, even after shutting everything down
and
powering up again. Any help appreciated!
