Re: no Actisync with USB! Ideas?

Yes, it was the Cisco VPN client after all !!! --((

I uninstalled ActiveSync, then the VPN client and then I re-installed
Activesync, which worked fine. Now, I just have to reinstall the Cisco VPN
client again.

Thanks for the help

Best regards,
Panagiotis

I understand. We have a Cisco ADSL router (800 series) and on my laptop I
have installed the Cisco VPN client.

Do you think that the VPN client might be affecting the operation of
Activesync?

Connections via USB are made via network I/O. IR connections are made
via serial I/O. There's a ton of difference between where the data goes
between the two ends of the connection. Since USB is a network
connection, your firewall and all sorts of components which are trying to
protect you from downloading viruses, having security holes in your
network presence, etc. from the Internet are invoked when you try to use
USB for ActiveSync.

This, it should be obvious, is not a problem with the USB port, but with
how it's being used and what other software pieces are involved because
of that usage. Storage card/flash USB sticks are *not* network devices,
so they don't have to worry about the firewall. Turn off all network
security (you can unplug the computer from your network, if this worries
you), and try again. If you connect to a work network securely via a
virtual private network, disable that. If you have virus scanners with
continuous protection *deinstall* them (disable often does not really
turn them off).

You know, the strange thing is that Activesync works perfectly well
through the IR connection and fails to establish a connection with the
USB cable.

Can someone make anything out of it?

Thanks

Hi,
The issue is with ISA Server 2004 Client. By default ActiveSync is not
part of the exceptions.

See http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/tshoot-as4x-firewall.htm
for the information I know about how to configure the ISA client to
work with ActiveSync.

Hi Chris,

Yes, I have Windows Firewall and ISA Server 2004 client. But I have
the same
on the IBM laptop which works fine with Activesync.

The USB ports of the "problematic" Dell laptop are working fine with
USB
sticks, document scanners, etc. I can send you log file of the AS
4.2 Troubleshooter, if you wish.

Any ideas?

Thanks very much for the help!

Panagiotis

Hi,
Do you have a software firewall that could be preventing the
connection?
In
ActiveSync 4.2 did you use the Troubleshooter (under the Help menu)
to see
what issues it found?

Hi,

I recently purchased a Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox N560 PDA with
Windows Mobile 5.0. I have Outlook 2003 (with the Microsoft CRM 3.0
Outlook client) with all the latest updates and Exchange Server 2003
SP2.

When I am trying either Activesync 4.1 or 4.2 to connect the
above PDA
to my Dell Latitude 610 laptop through the USB cable, although the
PDA is
detected, but after trying for approx. 20 secs the connection does
not
get
established.

If I try the same thing on my other laptop (IBM T43), everything
works
without a problem and syncing takes place. Please note that the IBM
laptop
has Outlook 2003 but without the Microsoft CRM 3.0 Outlook client.

I have read various reports about USB difficulties with
Activesync.
Any
ideas and/or suggestions?

Thanks

Panagiotis
