Re: Overwrite laptop

Thanks
I guess I'll continue to copy and move .pst files.
My schedules are important and I can't stand the risk associated with the
work arounds and the duplicate and missed dates.

Hi,

One option you have is to copy over the pst file from your computer to the
laptop and open both pst files within Outlook at the same time. You can
then select and move the data that you want into the pst file of the laptop.
But you would need to clear the entries of your laptop before moving since
it will not overwrite. Refer to the instructions under "For Example" to get
an idea about how you can select all items quickly and clear/move them
inside Outlook if you wish to go this route.

If you are keen on using the device to do the same, then this is not most
elegant workaround but it works. It might appear lengthy but the steps can
be done in a matter of few minutes. I assume you have not formed a
partnership with your laptop as yet. If the partnership is formed, then you
will need to delete it before proceeding with the steps. To delete the
partnership:

1. Disconnect the device from the computer.
2. In Activesync -> File -> Mobile Device.
3. Select the device whose synchronization relationship you want to end.
4. On the File menu, click Delete Partnership

Inbox sync is only supported on one computer. So since the laptop will be
the second PC, it will not allow you to sync it (assuming you are syncing
Inbox with the Desktop PC). To overwrite the laptop data for the remaining
information types, you will need to delete the items or move the items into
another folder before creating the partnership. This way the device sees no
entries are available in Outlook and proceeds to transfer the data from your
mobile device to Outlook, giving you the impression of overwrite.

For Example: To replace the Calendar items, do the following:

* In the example I have moved the data to a new folder, if you wish you can
delete them at #5 but would recommend you move the items first. Once the
sync is done successfully, check if the data is available the way you want
in Outlook and then simply proceed to delete the newly created folder
containing the data. Its very important that NO PARTNERSHIP is formed
between the device and the computer as explained earlier before doing the
following.

1. Open Outlook and Goto Calendar.
2. Click File -> New -> Folder
3. Then select the default Calendar, click View -> Arrange By -> Current
View -> By Category. This will list all your appointments in Outlook in a
single glance.
4. Next Click Edit -> Select All. This should select all the appointments.
5. Again Click Edit -> Move to Folder and select the folder you created in
#2. This should move all your appointments from the default calendar into
the new Calendar (folder).

You can do the same action under Contacts, Tasks and Notes before connecting
the device to form a partnership. When the partnership is formed, depending
on the information types you choose to sync, you should find the device data
in Outlook.

Just note that if there are any birthday/anniversary events in your Contact,
and you don't intend to overwrite data in your Calendar, then you would find
birthday/anniversary appointments being generated within your Outlook
Calendar, even if they are present.

Hi,

Could you specify which information type you want to overwrite on your
laptop. Although ActiveSync doesn't support it, you can do it via a work
around.

It would be VERY useful if I could sync my Ipaq to my desktop PC and
then
use
the Ipaq to overwrite my laptop.
It was a very positive feature that was available with the Palm sync
and
I'm
suprised MS doesn't have it for the Ipaq.
