Unrecognized Windows Mobile-Based Device

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I've been having a problem with a Pocket PC-based device and it being
recognized by Windows XP.

The device is a Trimble TSC2. It has Windows CE 5 installed on the device.

When I plug the device into Windows, it places it in the Device Manager with
an exclamation mark on it. Typically it will be listed as "Windows
Mobile-Based Device" followed by a #number. Each time I remove the device
from Device Manager and allow a redetect, this number increments.

When I do remove the device from Device Manager, and even if I clear out the
entries in the registry, it doesn't seem to make a difference. The device
will prompt for drivers and then when I allow it to search, it provides
error "The name is already in use as either a service name or a service
display name." Microsoft has one or two articles on this error, and I have
yet to find a fix.

I've searched for any services called "Windows Mobile-based" or "Data
Collector" and nothing seems to come up either in the registry or in the
actual services list.

The system has ActiveSync 4.2 installed. The device will work fine on other
systems, just not two in the office.

Both of the systems which are having the problem were upgraded from Windows
2000 Professional to Windows XP Professional.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
