To add to my earlier post, I have changed my laptop name to ensure that there
is no conflict, but still the same. AS doesnt recognizes my device.
Thanks,

Hi Paul,.
I have uninstalled norton and now my PC gives me a msg in the system tray -
a duplicate name exists on the network.
When I open the network connections, I can see the device connected as
windows mobile device. But still AS doesnt recognize the device.
What next?
Many Thanks,

Yes, I'm sorry about that. For some reason, OE was showing only a fraction
of the thread, although it's all shown now. My mistake.
I'm not sure I follow. Either the pairing exists or it doesn't. If it
doesn't, there's no problem with losing contacts, as AS will be creating a
new partnership with the PC when you connect it, and you get to decide how
to handle the contacts already on the device at that time. If the pairing
does exist, then any contacts that you've deleted on the device will also be
deleted from the PC when you connect it again. If you're worried that this
will be a problem, delete the partnership on both ends before connecting the
device to the PC and, again, a new partnership will be attempted and you get
to choose what happens to stuff. So, I'd delete the partnerships before
further research, since it seems that it worries you. When you get it to
connect, you'll have to build a new partnership, but contacts won't be going
away unless they're duplicates.
Until you get the connection fixed, nothing can happen to your contacts
because ActiveSync doesn't have an opportunity to sync.
Did you *uninstall* Norton completely? If not, turning off the firewall may
not do what you think; it may block *all* network connections, which would
prevent ActiveSync from working. The surest way to get any Norton firewall
stuff out of the picture is to uninstall it.

Paul - I guess you havent seen the entire post are you are confused.
Its my post and I rightfully added another to my original post. There is
no
hijacking involved.
One issue is protecting the data, but my major concern is about AS not
getting paired.
Thanks,

Delete the partnership before you connect the device. The only way you'd
lose your contacts on the desktop is if you deleted the contact on the
device before connecting it.

Hi Chris,
Is there a way to figure out which software firewall is preventing the
connection? I am sure its not Norton, as my config is perfect (I tried
even
disabling norton).

Hi,
It sounds like a software firewall may be preventing the connection.

It went on like that for about 120 steps each time incrementing
the

Trust you would find something out of this.

Yes, The Windows Mobile 5.0 Device has replaced the Serial over
USB
implementation we had earlier with a newer device/desktop
networking
solution built on Remote NDIS, which upon desktop connection
registers as
a
new Local Area Connection. The device will then assign an IP
address
to
itself and the desktop. In your case it seems that you don't even
get the
correct IP address assigned to the desktop - Seems like it is
timing
out
and
then you are gettign an Auto IP address.
Can you cradle your device and then open a command window and
after
say a
minute or two type "ipconfig" and paste as the output? Also - in
case you
can get us a network trace of the traffic between the device and
desktop,
it
would help alot - you can use sniffers like ethereal to capture
this.

Hi
I was able to sync my i mate JasJar successfully all these days
through
USB,
but for some days, ActiveSync is not getting conencted. For a
long
time,
on
the AS screen the green disc was revolving & said connecting,
but
finally
gave a msg that the device cant be connected.
When I have seen the error log, it says the norton is
preventing
the
connection. But I have done all settings for norton. I have
even
tried
connecting JJ after disabling the norton, but activesycn doesnt
work.
I have checked the following based on the forum posts & Chris'
website
(very
informative indeed), but in vain:
1. Configured norton, still doesnt work
2. Checked all services, still doesnt work
3. Disabled firewall, still doesnt work
4. Disabled norton, still doesnt work
5. exchanged USB ports, still doesnt work
6. Done soft reset, still doesnt work
7. Deleted some files, to make available Memory in device to
about
11
MB,
still doesnt work
8. Unpaired the device from ActiveSync, still doesnt work
9. Uninstallaed & installaed Activesync, still doesnt work
When I connect my device, an icon appears in the system tray
trying to
assign an IP address (some dots appear on network icon) and i
guess its
failing there. I have read in some forum/ article, that before
the
device
connects to a PC, it assigns an IP address. Are there any
settings
for
this?
Please help.
Cheers
Suresh Nallan
