ActiveSync nightmare

I bought a Dell X51v (WM5) 6 months ago and installed ActiveSync 4.0.
The PDA connects via USB to a Windows XP home PC. It sync'd for a
couple of days, and that was it, never sync'd again.
So, I upgraded to ActiveSync 4.2 today. It sync'd perfectly this
morning, praise the gods. Then, after I accidentally plugged my X5
PocketPC 2003 (and Sync'ing with my older PDA), now, once again, the
blasted thing won't sync with my new WM5 device.
It just sets there for several minutes, trying to connect, then
eventually throws up an error "Your device was not detected". Then
another box "Active sync cannot connect to the Windows Mobile powered
device. To troubleshoot the problem, click OK." Then try connecting
via the ActiveSync menu, On the "Get Connected" dialog it says "Your
device was not detected", but then beside USB in the Port list, it say
connected. I am confused.
There is an icon in the system tray which appears shorly after plugging
in the PDA, that I did not notice before (when it was working) .
Holding the mouse pointer over the icon it says "Local area connection
5. Speed: 10.0 mbps. Status: Aquiring network address." Is this
normal for a USB sync?
ANY help would be greatly appreciated. I will try anything, registry
changes, how to do a complete clean reinstall, etc, please help
Thank you
.
