ActiveSync and 403

I'm trying to get ActiveSync to work on my Windows 2003 R2 / Exchange
2003 SP 2 setup and it keeps returning a 403 to the client.
I've now made sure that forms based authentication is switched off, SSL
is disabled for both the Exchange virtual directory and
Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync and a server cert is installed.
Basic authentication is turned on for the Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync
directory and nothing else. The Exchange virtual dir has Basic
authentication and Integrated Windows Authentication turned on.
OWA works perfectly with the server as well.
Anonymous access is turned off for both virtual directories and
From the logs I see the following:

The only thing I haven't tried is method 2 from this:

Does anyone have a clue about what I'm missing here?

Thanks a lot in advance!
