Re: ActiveSync 4.2 & iPAQ

Hi,

I am assuming you are not using any USB hub to connect the cable. Since the
issue is occuring with both devices something is wrong on the desktop side.
Which OS are you using?

Could you try uninstalling AS completely.

1. Uninstall ActiveSync 4.x.
2. Go to Start -> Run and type:

%systemroot%\System32

Click Ok or enter.

3. Then manually delete the dynamic-link library Rapi.dll and ceutil.dll

4. Reinstall ActiveSync.

See if it helps.

Thanks Raj for your ongoing support with my iPAQ! Yes, I swapped USB
cables & used the replacement USB cable in an attempt at syncronisation
with my laptop pc. Further, I've tried the process using both cables with
my desktop pc & different USB ports. In both cases Active Sync cannot
connect to the Windows powered device. As mentioned before, I've noted &
captured the details for the firewall applications from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/default.mspxn to no
avail. I also have a 2nd new iPAQ 4150 & the same issues arises. These
pcs are standalone. Seems like my iPAQ(s) will continue to bear the "free
hippo" tag!!

Hi,

Since the connection is successful intermittently could you try setting
it
up on another PC to confirm the issue is not with the cable.

Thank you Raj for your clarification on the semantics.Of course, I
should
be 100 pct ontop of such labels; however, it appears that it may be the
continuos technical malfunction of Microsoft Acrivesync & the iPAQ to
communicate which is the ongoing issue at hand, not my obvious
shortcomings with the generic name of my iPAQ - a hx2190. It appears
that
problem may be insolvable given my limited technical knowledge ( a flaw)
which does not dovetail with Microsoft's (flawless?) flagship Active
Sync
program nos. 4.1 & 4.2. It appears that the iPAQ will get turned into a
'free hippo' ( a brick dressed in colourful plastic), which is given by
a
UK water utility to its customers to drop into the water cistern to save
water. Yes, I know my iPAQ isn't a brick, but yunno, it's almost the
same,
just like the difference between a pocket pc & a handheld pc, given
its
current relationship with AS 4.1 & 4.2. Isn't it?

Hi Chris,

Are you using an iPAQ (Pocket PC) or a Handheld PC? ActiveSync 4.2
seems
to
support only the following mobile device operating systems:

* Microsoft Windows Mobile Version 5.0
* Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition
* Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003
* Microsoft Pocket PC 2002, Microsoft Windows CE OS version 3.0
* Microsoft Smartphone 2002, Microsoft Windows CE OS version 3.0

If its an HPC, then recommend you use an older version of ActiveSync.

Thanks Raj for your suggestion.

Yes, as stated in my posting, I have captured items, eg Wcesmgr.exe,
Wcescomm.exe, Rapimgr.exe, etc into the applications list of my
firewalls
details of which were lifted from the same link referred to in your
posting. And no, it makes not a shred of difference to resolving the
problem!!

Under Device Manager, the USB Controllers often include a line saying
"Unrecognised or unknown device", or words to same effect. But in each
pc,
the line entry does not currently appear at the moment at that level
for
the reason that I'd deleted this line entry in the mistaken hope that
the
pcs would subsequently recognice the device (HPC) & then proceed to
re-establish a relationship. So when I connect the USB cable direct to
each device & switch "on" the HPC, there is nil recognitionon now by
the
pc of the connection. There is not even an electonic chime.

Yes, the HPC is set to use a USB connection, ie the USB box for
connections is checked. Yes, I have tried "add a new hardware device".
Ad,
no it fails to recognise the switched-on HPC that is connected via USB
link to the laptop pc. The wizard in the laptop pc could not find any
hardware on the pc, nor from the built in list on the pc.

I have only recently ( the last week of so) updated the Activesync
progarm
to the new Beta version in the mistaken hope that it would be a
solution
to the ills experienced. Frankly, as stated below, this whole
experience
has now become a disaster in terms of my relationship with my HPC. In
times past, as stated before, I never experienced these problems. I
have
used a HPC from the early days, some 8-9 years ago & frankly find it
just
a mega nuisance now. The only reason I pursue this is that I have an
investment in the HPC & I would like to receive some "value" in return
for
my cash outgoing on the purchase.

As stated in my posting, it is a sheer fluke that any syncronisation
occured at all - when it occured - on very rare occassions & on a
random
basis - as the program seems to have a mind of its own!

Thanks again.

Hi Chris,

Looks like something is interferring with the connection and
therefore
ActiveSync is unable to connect succesfully. Possible causes are
explained
on -
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/default.mspx.
Do you have any of those on your computer?

Additionally you can give a feedback about your experience with AS
4.2
via
e-mail. For more information -

When I try to sync my device with my laptop, the process usually
fails.
When
it does sync, but only on rare occassions I count myself blessed &
to
this
day can't figure out whether divine intervention was involved on the
basis
that all I had done was set up the process by linking the device to
the
laptop using a USB cable. Yes, a firewall is used, & yes I've
captured
the
requisite details into the MCAfee internet applications list in line
with
Microsoft's instructions. Yes, inspite of the foregoing, I've
switched
off
the firewall & rebooted the laptop pc & softbooted the device. The
green
circle will spin on my device, but the ActiveSync program stays
static
&
nothing more happens( except one or twice in the blue moon).

At one time, in the distant past, it was a breeze undertaking the
synchronisation, but given my experience with a replacement upgraded
HPC,
the
attractiveness of using a HPC is much diminished & actually
pointless
as
its
a value destroyer. (I did try and have my former HPC reconditioned,
but
it
was replaced with a new HPC inlieu).

I'm unaware of alternative devices that can do the same job.
However,
there
may be an obvious solution that I keep missing.

This program is particularly user unfriendly in my experience & I
truly
hope
that Microsoft recognises that they are "supporting" a product that
generates
an experience that is most unwelcome.
