Thanks for the reply Chris - yours was a most valuable site on this subject.

I provide the following to MS as market perspective - that's all:
- These all might be well documented issues, but they weren't BEFORE I
bought my phone. All the reviews I read on the service and the phone were
very positive. It wasn't until I actually had the phone home and the tried
ActiveSync that I realized the "problem was well documented." Too late to
avoid it. Now my choice is spend a LOT of time noodling on it, or turn it in
and start over. Both are very negative and extraordinarily frustrating to
me.
- IT is a support function, and generally speaking, they are not resourced
to fuss with my VPN config simply to accomodate me and my new widget; VPN is
mission critical and must support more than 100,000 people (most of which
are more important than me :) ). It would be better if this was sent out via
enterprise management tool updates or something so corporate IT doesn't have
to deal with 100,000 individual support calls. It makes me wonder if MS
Mobile is coordinated with MS Enterprise Server systems and the admin
support network.
- Not using WPA might mean going outside of acceptable corporate IT
guidelines, and subverts the whole purpose of improving security...
- Because I work for a technology company and have some persepective on how
change occurs, I will complain to Cingular so they in turn can complain to
MS. However, were I an average user, I would either just blame Microsoft and
wash my hands of the OS, or I would blame Cingular and
just_not_return_as_a_customer. Bad for everyone.
I hope this feedback is perceived as valuable, not just needless venting. It
isn't intended as such.

Hi,
First, the VPN issue is a well documented one. The issue is that the VPN
configuration does NOT allow any other network connections. You need to
speak with the network administrator regarding the configuration of the
VPN to see if they will allow you to connect your device and sync.
As for the 802.11g connections, there is a documented issue with using the
Intel 2200 card and WPA. You can configure the network to use WEP and
only allow the MAC addresses as an alternative secure configuration.
Finally, you should contact Cingular and complain. They are your official
line of support. This way Cingular can report it to Microsoft.

An update:
I've downloaded and installed 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2 - in all cases as soon as
I connect the device, my VPN connection is killed, I get a message
indicating routing tables cannot be changed during a connection, and then
AS gets stuck in a loop "Downloading Settings". Nothing ever happens.
So now it appears I have to find a completely different OS that works
(Palm?), spend another day at Cingular getting phone numbers changed and
accounts reconfigured. I CAN NOT BELIEVE how much time I'm wasting on
this. RIDICULOUS!

Hi -
I bought a Cingular 2125 on Friday because I wanted a phone that does
the PDA thing. Since Friday I've spent an unbelievable amount of time
just trying to get my phone to sync with Outlook. I've had an iPaq for a
couple of years with no problems, so I'm perplexed by this new
"experience".
Based on all of the sites I've read on this subject, I'm inclined to
believe that the new TCP/IP architecture for ActiveSync for WM5 was
WAYYYY not ready for prime time. Maybe I'm off base, but WOW have I
wasted a LOT of time - for a "productivity device".
So anyway, I'm posting this on the off chance there actually is a
workaround. I have the following success-limiting factors (SLF's) on my
PC:
1.) I work for a very large enterprise, and thus have an enterprise
version of Sygate Agent firewall - it doesn't appear to allow rules
2.) I work for a very large enterprise, and thus want to connect via VPN
to Outlook/Exchange
3.) I depend a lot on 802.11G and because I work for a very large
enterprise, I have to use WPA as well as LEAP protocol
4.) Of course I have Symantec AV (enterprise) - how silly of you to ask!
Did I mention I work for a very large enterprise, and I'm trying to be a
productive information worker?
For the MS contributors:
- When would a working version of AS be available for someone working in
the above mentioned environment? If there is NO SOLUTION IN SIGHT, could
you please be honest so I can stop wasting time and simply return this
product?
- If there is a workaround expected, can you give me a rough timeline?
Is it better to try and tinker or just wait until a real update is
available?
Sincere thanks - hope things get resolved soon.
Scott
