Activesync Hangs -- Treo 700W/WinXP/AS4.1

Up until a few weeks ago I could sync my new Treo 700 just fine. Then is
stopped working.

It would recognize the device, but just say "connecting...." and hang.

I reinstalled AS4.1 and now is recognizes the device, connects (after a
minute or two) and waits about 5 minutes before complaining with a "Cannot
Sync Device blah blah blah....Try reconnecting blah blah blah"

I've reconnected it, reset the device, rebooted the computer, etc. about 25
times in different combinations. I have no firewall, turned off sync of any
"funky app" like Phatnotes, etc. Deleted the partnership, made a new one (5
times).... Using the sync cable, not bluetooth sync...

Any other ideas? Can't get to the 1.1 Treo ROM upgrade as it requires
ActiveSync to be working.

Arrggghhhhh
