Usb Dell Axim Sync disappears reappears

Today I went to sync and here we go again. Dell Axim X30 with AS 3.8.
All was fine and now not. Put device in cradle or plug in sync cable
-same result: the connect sound is heard and then a few seconds later
heard again and again ...go in device manager Dell Axim Sync USB is
seen in device manager, then refresh and it is gone, then refresh
appears and so on...you get the idea.
Tried reinstalling driver won't work. Don't know if there is a drive on
the Dell OEM CD...cannot seem to find one. It won't install anyhow
because the device manager keeps loosing the usb so installing the
driver just hangs because the driver or the device disappears.
Manually unistalled and reinstalled Per Chris De Herrera website. Tried
unchecking root hub sleep options in root hubs. No joy. Completely
baffled. Wondering if the sync port I just got replaced a few months
ago is bad again.
IF I go into connection settings in AS usb shows as connected, but then
disconnects and shows available as the sound of connect and disconnect
is heard over and over.
Any other tips are appreciated. Dell Diagnostic tool shows connected
for usb when I plug it into cradle.
