I had the exact same error, and it turned out to be a corrupted
appointment in the calendar. Outlook 2003 would display "Can't open
this item. unknown error" when trying to open this one appointment.
Outlook wouldn't let me delete it, but after holding down the shift-key
and pressing delete on that item, it went away. Following the deletion
of the corrupted message, the windows mobile device synchronized fine.

I suggest that you use Outlook and open all of the new entries prior to
the last successful synchronization. Check your calendar, tasks,
notes, inbox, etc.... Hard-delete any corrupted items.
