ActiveSync stays "Synchronizing" even when all is completed

I'm now running into major problems with my ActiveSync v3.8.0 Build 5004
(downloaded from the Microsoft website) with my Dell Axim X30 with the A06
ROM, and Windows Mobile 2003 SE. It is a very well-discussed issue among
many of the forums and discussion groups. The issue is that ActiveSync (AS)
stays "Synchronizing" even after all of the files have been synch'ed. The
record status line says : "Files X of X completed", yet AS stays running. If
you disconnect the device, you hear the disconnect tone, the device works
fine, but AS in the desktop keeps on running. Once this happens, it is next
to impossible to get AS going a 2nd time or to even open it up. I have to
re-start the computer to reset AS to allow another AS session. Other forum
discussions talk about re-loading AS and making a new profile AS, which in
itself is a major task and very time-consuming.
I am so frustrated with AS that I'm ready to give up my Pocket PC! I would
get another PPC, but due to a lack of another 3rd party synch program, I
would be forced to use Microsoft's AS program no matter who's PPC hardware I
buy.
My suggestions for a new AS v3.9 are these:
- Publish better docs on how to work AS. In the Palm world, it is very easy
to find and backup all of the user profiles because they are in one location.
AS has so many places, no one can figure out how many files and where they
are located to back them all up. No one knows what each of the files are
used for.
- Allow for the use case where a user has to hard-reset their PDA and all we
want to do is to reload all of the programs and data that is on our desktop
computer. The Palm platform does this very well. In the AS world, we have
to completely create a new profile. It would be nice if we can just rename
the Device ID in the PPC and it wil then re-use the existing profile that we
had prior to the hard-reset.
- Allow the user access more control over the synching of data. Today, if
there are unresolved items, AS does have a pop-up that allows us to choose
between "desktop overwrites PDA", "PDA overwrites desktop", or do nothing.
This would be great to have at all times before a synching session so that if
we had to reload (and choose to overwrite) the dataset we can. The reason
for the choice to overwite is in case there is corruption in the PDA
database. The Outlook database always appears to be stable and good. So it
makes sense to allow us to manually choose to overwrite a particular database
so that we guarantee ourselves that the data from the desktop is copied over
in its entirety. Today, because AS does it record-by-record, it is possible
for some data to be lost in the synching process, and there is no way to
resynch it.
- For some reason, when AS v3.8 goes haywire, when you press the Stop
synching button, the rotating arrows logo keeps on spinning. It would be
nice to know why.
- Provide us with instructions about how we can shutdown and restart AS
without having to restart the entire computer. I did try this with the Task
Manager, found WCESMgr.exe, shut it down (using End Process), and then going
to Start-Programs-ActiveSync to restart it up. This did work for me, but I
also noticed that it seemed to consume more processing time and memory (as
seen in Task Manager).
- It would be nice to know if "Items X of X completed" truly means that the
item, was synch'ed or if it is in the middle of a synch. This way, when we
see that X out of X is completed, then we can unplug the device knowing that
we have synch'ed data.
- The Microsoft support website is lacks any detail of this issue, yet there
is a LOT of public forum discussion about this issue, all with suggestions
about how to temporary restore use. So far I've found none that actually has
a true workaround. I consider this to be a major bug in the AS software.
Also, there is no clear directions/instructions at the Windows Mobile
webpages to go to this discussion forum to report bugs (or was this
intentional?). Youshould make it clear that if none of the solutions at that
site fixes the issue that they should come here.
- I don't believe that the AS in the PDA is the issue. It works just fine
when you manually start and stop the synch; the PDA doesn't hang. The
desktop side just doesn't seem to cooperate. When you hit the stop button,
it stays synching. I use WinXP Pro, SP1.
One of your other customers in this MS forum said that ActiveSync is one of
the worst application in the marketplace. I'm inclined to agree. This one
piece of software could sink the entire PPC industry because of it's lack of
reliability. Now I know why 3rd party software is a good idea. At v3.8, I
would have expected a very stable product. I am amazed at the number of
people discussing the AS hanging problem.
Pls help!
David
