Re: Using IR to SYNC

I really haven't gotten anywhere with this. I guess I am out of luck. Seems
as if the problem is with AS either on the computer or on the device. I did
a hard reset for grins to see if that would help and that had the same
problem so I think the problem is within the desktop.
My AS connection settings are as follows:
Checked-Allow serial or IR on: "Infared Port (IR)"
Infared is available
Checked-Allow usb with desktop computer
USB is available
Unchecked-Allow Network and RAS
Network not available
No error message is received when IR connects to AS. AS icon on system tray
turns green and revolves a few seconds and freezes. "Active Sync (Not
Responding)" appears in the top gray border of the AS window that eventually
pops up after a minute or so. I then have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to get it to quit.
If I try to explore while IR is connect to active sync (keep in mind it is
not responding at this point), I get the following Error message: "Critical
Communications have failed to start. Try resetting the mobile device, and
then connect again."
Ironically, Active Sync 3.7.1 (which came with my dell CD) doesn't seem
compatible with the desktop which is Windows XP Home with current SP as it
would not open at all after numerous reboots. I had to move up to Active
Sync 3.8 to get AS to run. For some reason, 3.7.1 would install but the icon
would never appear in the system tray. I might be able to get to run if I
got connected for one try, but after I disconnected, the icon would
disappear again and I could not get it to start (task manager showed now
instance of wmcomm.exe) after numerous attempts to restart it via icon in
start menu or from program file by clicking wmcomm.exe directly. Sometimes
it wouldn't even run after a reboot of the computer. I had been having this
problem with it for a long time even before I had the issue with my sync
port falling out and trying to connect via IR. I had been getting "Device
not Recognized" when I was still able to sync with my cable. In fact, that
may have been due to the fact that the sync port was getting ready to fall
out.
Maybe there is a pre-existing corruption on my desktop?? Trying to
brainstorm here. I do know that installing newer versions of AS work
completely fine. So, for whatever reason AS 3.7.1 doesn't.
New things I have tried that have not worked cleaning of the registry of all
active sync. Uninstall and reinstall AS with versions 3.7.1, 3.8, 4.0.
Soft-reset of device as well as hard reset. Standing on my head, stomping my
feet.....you get the idea.
