Have you tried ensuring the path/file don't exist already? obviously (sic)
if it is there then deleting it may help.
Activesync leaves registry entries after it has been uninstalled- are there
any left over entries that may be interfering. Delete them, and yes, backup
the registry of your unnamed OS before you start messing around.
