Actually, It sounds like if the entire taskbar disappears that your explorer
(windows) is crashing and restarting, which will always only bring up
certain icons. if this is in fact the case your problem does not lie in
activesync but in the windows installation itself

Are you using XP? Is the icon for ActiveSync being hidden as are other
icons in the lower right hand corner with the greater than sign?
