    Thanks for the help...

    The mail disappears completely, it is not moved into the deleted items
    folder on my device or on my desktop. As for rules, I don't have anything
    setup, and no changes have been made to Outlook in this regard recently.

    Some more info... If I read the item on the desktop (and of course it then
    shows on the device as read) it acts normally and does not get deleted.
    The problem only occurs when unread items on the device are selected to be
    read.

    No changes have been made recently to my device or to outlook... the only
    anomaly is the unresolved inbox item that occured about a week ago that I
    cannot diagnose. This deleted message problem however only began to occur
    yesterday so I don't know if the two are related...
