Well, found out the problem.
Its was the IP range.
The system I was VPN'ing in to was 10.0.0.x, with a subnet mask of
255.255.255.0. Some of the networks I went through to get internet access
(The GPRS network) was also on the 10.x.x.x. range.
this confused it.
It was resolving the name to the IP address, but then searching for the IP
address on some of the private networks used on the GPRS connection.
Used a true class C network address and it works fine.
Looks like the VPN client or networking component on PPC isn't as clever as
on a Windows Client.
Oh well, we live and learn.
