Windows XP home. But I finally got it working. I just
started wholesale uninstalling software that I thought
might affect it. I did a bunch at one time, so I don't
know which did the trick, although I suspect it was the
firewall (even though I had it disabled). Here's a short
list:

Mcafee Personal Firewall
A malfunctioning non-plug-and-play via USB to PCI bridge
I updated my VIA chipset drivers
Some web-based java executable that my wife installed
I noticed that I had 2 TCP/IP transports installed on the
network adapter, one called itself "version 6"--I
uninstalled it

I'm just glad it's working now and I hope never to have
to deal with it again.
