If the pst is becoming corrupt / damaged that tends to suggest either a
third party app is accessing it, or there is a drive problem, or possibly
memory problem
Starting Outlook with the safe switch should prevent any other app accessing
the pst, but this start would not impact on your malformed windows problem

He does sometimes double click, but this isn't the source of this problem
as it happens when I single-click and also if I use the 'run' option as
someone else suggested.

Does he double click when opening Outlook and it is set to click only
once. That can explain it in one way. When double clicking the 1st window
opens and the other one is trying to open also

So what is causing this, and why does it not happen on the laptop? Any
idea?

Have now tried this, and the same problem re-occurs. Looks like a
reinstall... :(

Run
Outlook.exe /safe
(Note space between exe /) how does it then act?

The following problem occurs on my husband's computer, running
XPHome
and
Office 2003, plenty of hard disk space, pst file about 180MB, RAM
2GB.
Frequently when he opens Outlook, it pops up two windows. The rear
one
is
malformed (part-drawn, mostly header line and some side lines), the
top
one is OK but does not behave properly - he cannot move messages
between
folders, for example, though Send/Receive works OK. The top window
closes
when one clicks the top-right-hand 'x', as usual, but the malformed
rear
window can only be removed by refreshing the desktop.
Looking at Task Manager, it appears that Outlook is not closing down
properly and has to be manually stopped.
Running scanpst solves the problem for a day, perhaps, but then it
comes
back again.
If I copy the pst file to the laptop (XPPro and Office 2003) it
works
perfectly, no problems.
Does anyone know what's causing this and how it can be mended? Or
will
I
have to uninstall and reinstall Outlook?
