the face icon means its linked to a contact, the rolodex card icon means its not linked to a contact. The ones with the card icon will resolve to contacts if you double click to open - but something is not perfectly matched (like the display name) so it doesn't display the face icon.

I'm not sure what happened. But it seems that if I open the distribution list.
and then click on the "update" button, it re-establishes the links.
What is very strange is that when I perform this action, some but not all of
the icons in the left column change appearance from including a "face" to no
face, just "data". Not all of the icons change, but I can't seem to notice
anything different about the ones with and without "faces". As soon as I do
the update, all entries appear in my contacts address book list.
Do you have any documentation on the significance of these icons?

1. you need to add them to contacts
2. did you move the contacts? Import them? Something happened to break the
link between the contact and the DL.
