sending mail trouble

When I send an email using Outlook 2007 to someone in my contact list (for example the TO: field might look like "John Doe (jdoe@xxxxxxxxx)", it gets stuck in the Outbox and never leaves. If I type the same address so the TO: field actually only says: jdoe@xxxxxxxxx, then it goes off almost instantly. I've checked with my ISP and my settings are correct (ports, etc. all OK). Any suggestions, anyone?
