Duplicate personal folders in Outlook 2003

I built myself a new machine and now I'm in the long arduous process of
reinstalling all my applications. I installed Office 2003 Pro and thought I
could simply copy my backup copy of "outlook.pst" to the relevant folder and
be back where I was as on my old machine. However, I now have 2 identical
"Personal Folders". I cannot delete either and don't know how the extra one
got there. I tried uninstalling Outlook (4 times now) and then reinstalling
it but the same 2 instances of the Personal Folders resulted. I then did a
total uninstall of Office, cleaned the Registry and reinstalled it, opened
up Outlook, created a new account, closed Outlook, deleted the .pst file and
copied over my backup copy and the same 2 folders were there. I've done this
using another backup copy that is 3 months older and end up with the same
aggravating result.
What am I doing wrong???? Thanks for any and all help.
